The
Secretariat, which is the office of the General Secretary at the
headquarters, has the following departments:
1. Main
Office: This deals with General
Secretary’s correspondence, matters regarding admission into the Order,
various conferences and meetings at the headquarters, enquiries about
the various activities of the Math and Mission, and
Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Bhav Prachar Parishads
and does other miscellaneous functions, such as receiving visitors, etc.
2. Accounts Department: Maintains the
accounts pertaining to the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and
Ramakrishna Mission. It also provides scholarships to needy
students.
3. Audit
and Consolidation Department: The main
functions of this department are: scrutiny / review of various
statements of accounts and reports of works sent by the branch centres,
consolidation of annual accounts of headquarters and branch centres,
publication of annual general report of Math and Mission, filing income
tax return, etc.
4. Cash
Department: Receives donations and
deals with all other types of monetary transactions.
5.Construction and Maintenance Department:
Deals with construction and maintenance of buildings at the
headquarters.
6. Estate
Department: This department deals
with the sale of immovable assets like land and houses and also movable
assets received as donations from well-wishers.
7. Law
Department: This department deals
with all legal matters of the Math and Mission.
8. Relief
and Rehabilitation Department:
When calamities occur, the Relief department at the headquarters
directly conducts, and also provides financial assistance to branch
centres to conduct, primary relief work on a massive scale and takes up
large-scale rehabilitation projects. (See separate entry for
details.)
9. Staff
Welfare Department: Ramakrishna Math
and Ramakrishna Mission are among the few non-government organizations
in India which readily make available to their paid staff all over the
country the benefits of provident fund and gratuity through centrally
administered, tax-exempted Trusts.
The Secretarial Office also directly runs the
following units at Belur Math:
1. Charitable Dispensary: It has free
allopathic and homoeopathic sections. The allopathic section has
several departments such as general, dental, ophthalmology, ENT,
dermatology, gynaecology, radiology (including ultrasonography),
pathology and biochemistry. It treated 7,53,216 cases during the
year 2004-05.
2. Social
Welfare Department: This
department is meant for rendering service to the weaker sections of
society. It extends regular financial help to more than 300 poor
families and about 2500 poor students. The department also gives
occasional monetary help to hundreds of poor patients and other needy
people. The total expenditure on this account for the year 2004-05 was Rs. 22,72,378. Besides this monetary help, the department also
provides books and school uniforms free of cost to more than 1000 needy
students, garments and blankets to thousands of poor and needy people,
and tricycles, wheelchairs, etc to the disabled every year.
3. Pallimangal: (Integrated Rural
Development): The main functions of this department are: overseeing the
rural development programmes conducted by two branch centres at
Kamarpukur and Jayrambati in West Bengal, providing marketing facilities
for village industry products, and giving financial help to rural youths
to pursue formal or vocational education.
4. Veda
Vidyalaya: This Vidyalaya, affiliated
to the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, a deemed university,
imparts Vedic and Sanskrit education to boys in secondary (Purva
Madhayama) and higher secondary (Uttara Madhyama) levels. The
boys are generally drawn from the economically backward families of
rural areas. There were 22 boys in the year 2004-05.
5. Ramakrishna
Museum: In this Museum articles and artifacts
closely associated with Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, Swami Vivekananda
and other direct disciples of the Master are exhibited.
