Though the Mission started functioning in the island in 1924 with the management of a few schools, the centre in Colombo was formally established in 1930. Swami Atmaghanananda is the swami-in-charge of the centre.
Activities:
- A free library and a reading room with 7800 books and 23 newspapers and magazines.
- A Sunday school for children with 756 on roll.
- An International Cultural Centre with guest rooms, library, etc.
- Welfare work such as pecuniary help to the poor, educational aid to students, and free monthly medical camps for children and destitutes, spending Sri Lankan Rupees 44,79,798 this year.
- Lectures in the ashrama's Swami Vivekananda Centenary Memorial Hall, one of the biggest auditoriums in Colombo.
- Personality development camps for children from schools all over Colombo.
- Daily worship, weekly classes, fortnightly retreats, and occasional festivals.
- Celebration of the birthdays of prophets.
- A sub-centre at Batticaloa with the following activities:
- Three orphanages with a total of 61 boys and 79 girls.
- Two nursery schools with 119 children.
- A Sunday school with 300 children.
- Daily worship and weekly congregational prayers.
- Occasional classes at Mantivu Lepers' Asylum, where it maintains a temple for the inmates and local people of the village.
- Welfare work by way of providing school stationery, clothes, building materials and financial assistance to destitute children and refugees (7,30,884 Sri Lankan rupees spent this year).
