The centre was started in 1930 and made a branch of the Mission in 1934. It is a comprehensive educational institution, spread over an extensive plot of land on the Coimbatore-Ootacamund Road, 19 km from the town.

Activities :

  1. An autonomous arts & science college, which offers degree and postgraduate courses (roll strength - 1369).
  1. A higher secondary school having 1056 students. The attached sports school admits boys who are talented in sports and are 14 years and above, into classes VIII to XII (students' strength 108). Special coaching facilities are provided to these boys in certain games and sports along with academic education.

  1. A residential high school with 247 students. Integrated education was provided to a few blind boys along with other students.

  1. A senior basic school having 702 students, of whom 235 were girls. Free midday meals were given to 330 students.
  1. A balawadi (kindergarten) for 78 children.
  1. An autonomous teachers' training college offering BEd, MEd, MPhil and PhD courses. It had 144 students during the year. Its Extension Services Unit conducted 3 courses as in-service training during the year. The attached research department conducts educational research and publishes a quarterly journal.
  1. A residential secondary grade teachers' training institute with 159 students.
  1. International Human Resource Development Centre for the Disabled, which provides treatment (173 cases this year) and artificial limbs (23 persons this year) to the disabled and trains them (108 persons this year) to become self-reliant. It has a research department which conducts training for field workers and parents of the disabled children.
  1. A college of physical education with 247 students. Its fitness centre had 1495 members.
  1. An autonomous polytechnic, which offers three-year diploma courses in civil, electrical, electronics and mechanical engineering with emphasis on rural engineering. It had 704 students this year. The community polytechnic run by the institution trained 619 rural youths in different trades during the year.
  1. An industrial institute offering a two-year course in fitting, turning, draughtsmanship, motor mechanics and electrical wiring, and a one-year course in computer software registered 358 students this year.
  1. An industrial section, a key maintenance wing, which looks after the repair and maintenance needs of the various institutions of the Vidyalaya.
  1. A school of agriculture, which offers a two-year diploma course. It had 89 students during the year.
  1. Eleven libraries of the Vidyalaya, which had 1,14,945 books and 292 journals.
  1. Eleven hostels with 1743 students.
  1. A town centre where scriptural classes, retreats, etc are held.
