The centre was started in 1931.

Activities at Cherrapunjee:

  1. A higher secondary school and three lower primary schools.

  1. A small vocational school for teaching weaving, tailoring, and knitting.
  1. A hostel for 110 boys.

  1. A mobile audio-visual unit.
  1. A charitable dispensary with a mobile unit, which treated 19,283 patients this year.
  1. A library and a reading room with 15,232 books and 26 periodicals.
  1. A museum depicting tribal culture.
  1. Celebration of the birthdays of religious celebrities.

Activities at Sohbar (Sohbarpunjee, PIN 793108), about 18 km down Cherrapunjee :

  1. A lower and an upper primary school, and a secondary school.
  1. A vocational training centre (weaving).

  1. Two hostels, one with 25 boys and the other with 34 girls.


Activities at Shella (Disong Shella Village, P.O. Shella Bazar, PIN 793112):

  1. A lower primary school and an upper primary school and a secondary school.
  1. A small library.
  1. Celebration of the birthdays of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, as also Durga Puja, Kali Puja etc.
The centre also runs similar schools at other places.

In all, it runs 1 higher secondary school, 10 secondary schools, 16 M. E. schools and 37 lower primary schools. Altogether 4886 boys and 4632 girls studied in these schools during the year.
