Relief Work : A Brief Report As On 31 November 2012

1.   Neelam Cyclone Relief: Tamil Nadu:  A devastating cyclone ‘Neelam’ struck a major portion of southern India on 30 October.  Our Chennai Math centre immediately conducted primary relief work in the worst-affected districts of Tamil Nadu, mainly Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.  The relief work was conducted in three phases as mentioned below:

Phase 1: In all, 51,500 plates of cooked food were served among 10,250 affected people in 12 villages from 2 to 5 November.  Children were served with milk and biscuits too.

Phase 2:  2208 towels, 1104 saris and an equal number of dhotis, bed-sheets and mats were distributed among 1104 affected families in Madappuram, Padugai, Kalathidalkarai, Semberi and Keezhapidagai villages on 5 and 6 November.

Phase 3:  1000 saris and an equal number of dhotis, towels, bed-sheets and mats were distributed among 1000 affected families in Mylapore, Vadapathi, Kovilpathu, Thensarai, Kodiyalathur, Karai Nagar, Prathabharamapuram, Thamaraikulam and Kaikatti villages from 9 to 11 November.

2.   Earthquake and Tsunami Relief: Japan: Our Japan centre continued its relief work among the families affected by the devastating earthquake and the ensuing tsunami which had struck Japan in March 2011.  The following items were distributed among the victims: (a) 1200 bottles (500 ml each) of Oolong tea and 1200 bottles (270 ml each) of dishwashing soap in September-October 2011, (b) 20 sewing machines, 30 irons, 50 ironing boards, 120 frying pans, 510 cooking pots, 240 pairs of rain-boots, 7992 diapers and 200 tubes of toothpaste in May 2012, and (c) 300 kg rice, 500 boxes of tissue paper and 540 rolls of toilet paper in September 2012.
3.   Winter Relief: 750 blankets were distributed through the following centres among poor people: Chandipur – 250, Jamtara – 250, Lucknow – 250.
4.   Distress Relief: The following centres distributed various items, shown against their names, to needy people:

In India:

Agartala: 955 children’s garments in October,

Antpur: 406 saris and 14 dhotis on 19 October,

Cooch Behar: 358 saris, 34 dhotis and 10 lungis on 11 November,

Gadadhar Ashrama: 100 saris, 50 pants, 50 shirts and 50 frocks in October,

Sarisha: 1609 saris, 20 frocks, 20 shirts and 20 pants from 15 October to 4 November.

In Bangladesh:

Dinajpur: 576 saris, 300 dhotis, 120 kg flour, 120 kg suji, 120 kg sugar and 120 kg cooking oil in October.

  1. Drought ReliefOur Malda centre distributed 600 kg rice, 100 kg pulses, 600 kg potatoes, 100 kg mustard oil, 40 kg milk powder, 100 kg sugar and 200 saris among 200 drought-affected families belonging to 3 villages of Habibpur block in Malda district.
  2. Distress ReliefThe following centres distributed various items, mentioned against their names, to poor and needy people:

Baranagar Math: 490 saris, 25 dhotis and 245 children’s garments on 15 October;

Belgharia: 1437 shirts, 1124 pants, 500 dhotis, 430 lungis, 1039 saris, 231 sets of salwar-kameez, 473 frocks, 133 woollen garments and 580 blankets among 1015 poor families from June to October;

Cherrapunjee: 500 saris from 14 to 30 October;

Jalpaiguri: 300 saris, 50 dhotis and 150 children’s garments on 14 October;

Karimganj: 200 saris and 81 dhotis in the month of October;

Malda: 110 saris, 90 dhotis and 400 children’s garments;

Vrindaban: 1425 kg rice, 1425 kg wheat flour, 450 kg pulses, 325 kg mustard oil, 400 kg salt and 162 kg sugar among 525 poor widows in Vrindaban on 15 October.

Relief Work : A Brief Report As On 30 September 2012

1.   Flood Relief: (i) Assam: Our Narottam Nagar centre distributed 350 agricultural sprayers among an equal number of flood-affected farmers of Jorhat district on 23 September.

      (ii) Uttarakhand:  Our Dehradun centre continued its flood relief work in Bhatwari area of Uttarkashi district. The centre distributed 708 kg rice, 776 kg dal (pulses), 61 kg salt, 94 litres cooking oil, 152 packets of biscuits, 11 kg milk powder, 88 kg sugar, 1428 matchboxes, 100 blankets and 40 sweaters among 388 families belonging to 7 villages in the affected district from 28 August to 4 September. 

2.   Distress Relief: Our Garbeta centre distributed 55 saris, 250 shirts, 250 pants and 700 assorted garments among 1500 poor and needy people of nearby areas.

Relief Work : A Brief Report As On 31 AUGUST 2012

  1. Flood Relief: (A)India(i) Assam: (a) Our Itanagar centre continued its flood relief work in Assam.  The centre distributed 14,100 kg rice, 4230 kg dal (pulses), 4230 kg potatoes, 1410 kg soyabean, 705 litre mustard oil, 1410 kg salt, 1410 kg chira (rice flakes), 353 kg sugar, 5640 packets of biscuits, 282 kg detergent powder, 2820 candles and 14,100 matchboxes among 1410 flood-affected families in 29 villages of Dhemaji district from 25 July to 4 August.

(b) Our Guwahati centre distributed 55 dhotis, 60 saris and 20 kg Protein powder among 215 flood-affected people in Yogijan area of Nagaon district.

(c) Our Silchar centre conducted medical camps in Barkhola, Silchar, Udharban and Sonai areas of Cachar district.  Nearly 4,00,000 halogen tablets were distributed among 4000 families in the above areas.

(ii) Madhya Pradesh:    Heavy rainfalls and release of water by dams caused heavy floods in and around Omkareshwar in Khandwa district, affecting many poor families.  Our Indore centre distributed 300 blankets, 300 saris, 150 pyjamas (trousers), 150 shirts and 117 water-filters among 150 flood-affected families on 31 August.

(iii) Uttarakhand:In the wake of the recent devastating flash floods caused by sudden cloud bursts, thousands of families have been affected and many lives endangered in the state.  Our Dehraduncentre distributed 7310 kg rice, 2924 kg dal (pulses), 731 litre mustard oil, 365 kg spices, 439 kg salt, 5848 packets of biscuits, 439 kg milk powder, 365 kg tea leaves, 1462 kg gur (molasses), 360 sweaters, 100 mattresses, 1000 blankets,8772 matchboxes and 8772 candles among 1462 flood-affected families in 11 villages of Uttarakashi district.

(B) Fiji: Our Nadi centre continued its flood relief work in Fiji. The centre further distributed varieties of high-quality imported vegetable seeds among 3515 farmers in 6 districts.

2.       Distress Relief:The following centres distributed various items to needy people. Details are given in brackets.

Baghbazar (200 saris through Gourhati centre, 200 lungis and 100 saris through Naora centre, and medicines and nutritious diet to 7 poor patients and text books to 10 needy students directly by the Baghbazar Ashrama); Bangalore (500 notebooks, 100 school bags and 30 geometry boxes); Garbeta (50 saris and 50 lungison 17 August); Nagpur (1110 school uniforms, 3250 notebooks and 1080 pens to students of 23 schools in 18 villages of Nagpur district from 16 July to 3 August); Naora (400 children’s garments and 100 sarison 16 and 17 August); Vrindaban (92 tumblers, 70 buckets, 80 plates, 42 trunks, 22 bags, 11 cans, 71 LPG cylinders with stoves, 179 cooking vessels, including 109 pressure cookers, among 303 poor widows of Vrindaban from 7 to 11 August).

      Besides, our Baghbazar centre served 4082 meals to poor persons from May to August.

Relief Work : A Brief Report As ON 31 JULY 2012

  1. 1.   Flood Relief: (i) India: Assam: (a) In the wake of the devastating floods caused by heavy rains and breach of dams, affecting hundreds of families in upper Assam, our Itanagar centre conducted primary relief work and a general health camp on 8 July.  The centre distributed 2195 kg rice, 383 kg dal (pulses), 121 kg chira (rice flakes), 400 kg potatoes, 10 kg soybean, 65 kg mustard oil, 27 kg gur (molasses), 405 kg salt, 676 packets of biscuits, 109 packets of candles, 100 packets of mosquito-repellent coils, 600 matchboxes, 109 soap-bars, 40 kg detergent powder, assorted garments and medicines among 1000 flood-affected people of Sooteia in Sonitpur district, Assam.

(b) Our Narottam Nagar centre distributed 5000 tarpaulin sheets to an equal number of flood-affected families at Majuli Island and Kaliapani in Jorhat district.  The centre also distributed 512 blankets, 256 mosquito-nets, 256 lanterns, 2600 packets of biscuits and 256 utensil‑sets [each set containing 1 karai (cooking pot), 1 saucepan, 1 khunti, 1 ladle, 2 plates, 2 tumblers and 1 pot for storing water, etc] to 256 families belonging to Tengabari village of Panitola block in Dibrugarh district.

(c) Our Guwahati centre arranged three medical camps in Kamrup district (two at Rangia and one at Sonapur) in which altogether 1053 patients were treated.  Besides, nearly one lakh halogen tablets were supplied to the villagers of Rangia and Sonapur blocks in Kamrup district and Hojai in Nagaon district.  The centre also distributed 100 saris and 50 dhotis to flood-affected people in Rangia.

(ii) Fiji: Our Nadi centre continued its flood relief work in Fiji.  The centre further distributed varieties of high-quality imported vegetable seeds among 2361 farmers in 6 districts of the country.

  1. 2.   Drought Relief: (a) Maharashtra: Our Pune centre continued its drought relief work in Ahmednagar district.  About 77,000 residents of 30 villages in the district were supplied with nearly 48,63,000 litres of drinking water in the month of July.

(b) West Bengal: (i) Our Malda centre sunk 3 tube-wells, one each in 3 drought-affected villages, namely Sishabari, Mihirdas and Shyamdaspukur, in Malda district.

(ii) ‘Vivekananda Sarovar’ in Arita under Purulia Block II, excavated by our Purulia centre with financial support from the Government of West Bengal, was inaugurated on 16 July.

1.   Drought Relief: Maharashtra:  Our Pune centre continued its drought relief work in Ahmednagar district.  The centre distributed about 30 lakh (3 million) litres of drinking water to nearly 56,000 residents of 25 villages in the district in the month of June. 

2.   Distress Relief: Our Madurai centre distributed 5008 notebooks among 500 needy students on 8 June.

Relief News : May 2012

A  Brief  Report  As  ON  31  MAY  2012

  1. 1.       Drought Relief: Maharashtra:  Our Pune centre distributed drinking water to about 45,000 persons affected by acute water scarcity in 6 villages of Solapur district and 9 villages of Ahmednagar district.
  2. 2.       Hailstorm Relief: West Bengal: Our Malda centre supplied hut-building materials (640 bamboos, 22,600 roof tiles, etc) to 52 families of Khaspara village in Malda district, whose dwellings had been severely damaged in the destructive hailstorm this month.
  3. 3.       Tornado Relief: Bangladesh: A powerful tornado hit northern Bangladesh last month.  Our Dinajpur centre distributed 672 kg rice, 24 plates, 50 buckets and 43 dhotis among 136 affected families of 7 villages in Thakurgaon district, Bangladesh.
  4. 4.       Flood Relief: Fiji:  Our Nadi centre continued its primary relief work in Western Viti Levu in Fiji.  The centre further distributed 2730 lunch parcels among needy students.  Moreover, 10,000 exercise books and stationery goods are being distributed among 1200 students of 10 schools in flood‑affected areas.
  5. 5.       Fire Relief: Arunachal Pradesh:  Our Itanagar centre distributed 18 sets of utility items [each set containing a steel trunk, a bed-sheet, a plastic mat, two buckets, a tawa (griddle), cooking vessels, ladles, a mug, a plate, a tumbler, candles, bathing soap, washing soap, matchboxes, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc] among the families whose houses had been gutted by a devastating fire in Barapani basti (area) in Naharlagun district.
  6. 6.       Distress ReliefThe following centres distributed various items, shown in brackets, to needy people: 

     Belgharia (941 saris, 510 dhotis, 256 lungis, 1457 shirts, 1323 pants, 1113 frocks, 315 sets of salwar-kamiz, 213 woollen garments and 300 blankets among 728 families of 15 villages in Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and Hooghly districts); Vrindaban (1200 kg rice, 1200 kg wheat flour, 300 kg pulses, 300 kg mustard oil, 600 kg salt and 150 kg sugar among 600 elderly widows of Vrindaban).

A  Brief  Report  As  ON  30 APRIL  2012

1.   Flood Relief: Fiji:  Most of the areas at Western Viti Levu in Fiji were struck again by devastating floods towards the end of March 2012.  Our Nadi centre restarted its primary relief work in and around Nadi town which is among the worst-hit areas with about 4 to 6 feet of standing water.  The centre served nearly 1500 cooked meals and distributed family grocery packs (each pack containing 5 kg rice, 2 kg peas, 2 kg flour, tea, oil, salt, etc.) and clothing to 470 affected families.  About 7700 lunch parcels were distributed among needy students.

2.   Distress Relief: The following centres distributed various items, shown in brackets, to needy people: Guwahati {4 sewing machines, 4 weaving machines (tatsals)}; Nagpur (77 saris, 8 dhotis, 25 pants, 40 T‑shirts, toothpowder, soap, etc.)

  • 1.     Winter Relief: 612 blankets were distributed to poor people through the following centres:

2.  Fire Relief: The following centres distributed various items among the families whose houses had been gutted by fire:

 

       (i) Andhra Pradesh: Our Rajahmundry centre distributed 1262 saris, 1070 lungis, 550 towels and an equal number of chaddars, mats and utensil sets (each set containing 3 cooking pots, 3 ladles, 1 plate and 1 tumbler) among 550 families in Pallam village, near Amalapuram in East Godavari district.

 

       (ii) Odisha: Our Bhubaneswar centre distributed 75 kg chira (rice flakes), 15 kg sugar, 60 packets of biscuits, 15 kg salt, 30 kg chhatu (gram flour), 15 saris and an equal number of lungis, towels, mats and tarpaulin sheets to 15 families in Kantailo village of Bolgarh block in Khurda district.

 

3.    Flood Relief: Fiji:   Our Nadi centre continued its extensive relief work in Nadi and Ba areas of Fiji.  The centre distributed 537 grocery packs (each pack containing 2 kg rice, 2 kg dal (pulses), 1 kg sugar, 500 gm salt, 200 gm spices, 2 packets of breakfast crackers, 1 packet of powdered milk, 500 ml cooking oil, 1 can of baked beans / peeled tomatoes, etc) and 150 cartons of clothes among the affected people.  The centre also supplied lunch parcels to 108 students for 4 weeks.  Exercise books and stationery items were distributed among 247 needy students and medical care was provided to 938 patients.  The centre has also initiated a rehabilitation programme for the local flood-affected farmers by supplying them with good seeds and has started, for this purpose, renovation and upgrading of a large nursery.   

4.    Distress ReliefOur Dinajpur (Bangladesh) centre distributed 128 saris among poor and needy people.

1.      Winter Relief: 13,952 blankets were distributed through the following centres to poor people:

   In India:   Almora – 250, Antpur – 600, Asansol – 914, Baranagar Mission – 600, Belgharia – 300, Bhubaneshwar – 200, Contai – 300, Chapra – 2000, Gol Park – 250, Guwahati – 450, Jaipur – 250, Jamtara – 250, Kamarpukur – 1000, Kankurgachhi – 250, Katihar – 100, Khetri – 131, Mysore – 250, Naora – 250, Narendrapur – 300, Ootacamund – 307, Puri Mission – 250, Ramharipur – 2000, Saradapitha – 500, Sikra Kulingram – 350, Taki – 250,  Vrindaban – 950.

Moreover, our centres at Belgharia, Chapra and Guwahati distributed 13 woollen garments, 1350 sweaters and 123 sweaters respectively to poor children.

In Bangladesh: Dinajpur centre distributed 700 blankets and 500 winter garments.

2.    Fire Relief: Our Gol Park (Kolkata) centre continued its relief work among the families whose huts had been gutted by a devastating fire in Kalikapur area, near E.M. Bypass, Kolkata.  The centre distributed 225 saris among the victims from 30 January to 1 February.

3.   Flood Relief: (i) Fiji:  In the wake of the devastating floods which hit most of the Western Viti Levu towns of Fiji, our Nadi centre, despite itself being about two feet under water, started extensive primary relief work in the nearby affected areas.  The centre served nearly 2200 cooked meals and distributed 392 grocery packs (each pack containing 2 kg rice, 2 kg pulses, 1 kg sugar, 500 gm salt, 200 gm spices, 2 packets of breakfast crackers, 1 packet of powdered milk, 500 ml cooking oil, 1 can of baked beans / peeled tomatoes, etc.) among the affected people. Besides, 65 people availed medical care also.

      (ii) India:  The following centres continued flood relief operations in Odisha and West Bengal:

2.  Fire Relief: Our Gol Park centre served cooked food (khichdi) and distributed 150 blankets, 100 saris, 150 lungis, 77 vests, 12 sets of children garments, 10 sweaters, etc among 83 families whose huts had been gutted by a devastating fire in Kalikapur area, near E M Bypass, Kolkata.

3.  Flood Relief: (i) FijiIn the wake of the recent floods in Nadi (Fiji), our Nadi centre started primary relief work by distributing cooked food among the affected families.

     (ii) India: Odisha: Continuing its flood relief operations, our Bhubaneswar centre distributed 425 sets of study material (each set containing 1 school bag, 1 notebook, 1 pen, 1 pencil, 1 scale and 1 value education book) among 425 needy students belonging to flood-affected families in Tigiria block of Cuttack district from 18 to 20 January.

4.  Cyclone Relief: Tamil Nadu: Our Chennai Math centre served cooked food to 2800 victims of the devastating cyclone ‘Thane’ on 30 December, the day on which it had struck north coastal Tamil Nadu.
