The
birthday (tithi-puja) of Swami Vivekananda was
celebrated at Belur Math on Wednesday, 10 January. Thousands of
devotees attended the celebration throughout the day. Cooked prasad was
served to about 19,000 devotees. Swami Prabhanandaji, Trustee of
Ramakrishna Math and Member of the Governing Body of Ramakrishna
Mission, presided over the public meeting held in the afternoon.
Swami Gahananandaji, President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna
Mission, inaugurated the new building for the seminary (popularly called
Training Centre) at Belur Math on 20 January,
the sacred birthday of Swami Brahmanandaji (the first President of the
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission and a monastic disciple of Sri
Ramakrishna).

India:
Sri Krishna Mohan Seth,
Governor of Chhattisgarh, inaugurated the annual celebration of
Raipur
centre on 1 January.
On 11 January, Swami
Atmasthanandaji, Vice-President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna
Mission, released two books, namely Consciousness: A Deeper
Scientific Search and Swami Vivekananda in Contemporary
Indian News (1893-1902): Vol. II, brought out by the
Institute of
Culture,
Kolkata. He also handed over Vivekananda Medal and a cash award
of Rs. 25,000 to the representative of SEWA Rural, Jhagadia, Gujarat,
for their excellent rural development work.
Vijayawada
centre launched a project named Viveka Vahini on 12 January, the
National Youth Day. This programme is meant to carry the message of
Swami Vivekananda to different educational institutions and rural areas
through a mobile unit equipped with audio-visual equipment, pictorial
exhibits, and literature on the life and teachings of Swami
Vivekananda. The project will also focus on personality development,
national integration, and other themes of national interest in the light
of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings.

Narendrapur
centre
organized
the first phase of the golden jubilee celebrations of its Blind Boys’
Academy from 18 to 20 January. Sri Gopal Krishna Gandhi,
Governor of West Bengal, inaugurated the function. The Governor also
inaugurated the exhibition of the Academy arranged on this occasion as
well as the annual celebration of the Ashrama’s Lokashiksha Parishad on
18 January.
Taki
centre organized an
eight-day function from 21 to 28 January in connection with the
Ashrama’s platinum jubilee. Swami Gahananandaji, President,
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, inaugurated the exhibition,
released a commemorative volume and gave a benedictory address on 21
January. The programme also included public meetings, cultural
functions, etc. 
Swami Atmasthanandaji,
Vice-President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, laid the
foundation stone for the proposed students’ home building (Vivekananda Vidyarthi Bhavan) at
Nagpur
Math on 22 January, the holy birthday of Swami Trigunatitanandaji
Maharaj.

Chief Minister of Tripura, visited Viveknagar centre, Tripura, on
27 January and addressed a meeting organized on this occasion.
A student of Deoghar
Vidyapith stood first among the contestants from Jharkhand State in the
annual environmental examination, named The Green Olympiad,
organized by TERI (The Energy and Research Institute), New Delhi,
last year. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt of India,
awarded him a scholarship of Rs. 5500.

Swami
Amaranandaji, Head of
Geneva
centre, Switzerland, reached Delhi on 25 January on a four-week visit to
India.
Obituary
We are sorry to announce the untimely demise of Swami
Yogarupanandaji (Govinda Maharaj) in the afternoon of 14 January,
the sacred Makar Sankranti day, at Belur Math. He was 46 and had been
suffering from depression and insomnia for some months. An initiated
disciple of Swami Vireshwaranandaji, he joined the Order at Varanasi
Advaita Ashrama in 1985 and had Sannyasa from Swami Bhuteshanandaji in
1995. Besides his joining centre, he served at Ranchi Morabadi and
Delhi
centres. He was staying at Belur Math for the last five months.

return to Belur Math on 4 February after his tour of Kamarpukur and
