Obituary

We are sorry to announce the passing away of three of our brother-monks during the last month.

Swami Tadatmanandaji (John Maharaj) passed away at the Trabuco monastery (a sub-centre of the Vedanta Society of Southern California, Hollywood, USA) on 11 January at 5.07 am local time (6.37 pm Indian Standard Time) owing to cardiac arrest.  He was 76.  Initiated by Swami Prabhavanandaji, he joined the Order at Hollywood centre in 1959 and had Sannyasa from Swami Vireshwaranandaji in 1971.  After his initial few years in the Hollywood monastery, he spent the remainder of his 49-year monastic life at Trabuco monastery.  The Swami was a talented artist, and his many oil paintings of the Holy Trio and others are spread in several countries.  He had become especially well known as the creator of the large painting depicting all the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna standing together.  The Swami was respected and loved for his dedication, and gentle and affable nature.

Swami Vidyanandaji (Vijay Maharaj) passed away on 20 January at 9 am at Varanasi Home of Service owing to chronic renal failure.  He was 99 and had been lying almost unconscious for the last three years.  An initiated disciple of Swami Shivanandaji (a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna), he joined the Order at Chandipur centre in 1927 and had Sannyasa from Swami Vijnananandaji Maharaj (a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna), in 1937.  Besides his joining centre, he served at Belur Math, Gadadhar Ashrama, Varanasi Home of Service, Kanpur, Vrindaban, Kankhal, Bankura, Asansol, Chennai Math, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Baghbazar and Jayrambati centres.  He had been leading a retired life at Varanasi Home of Service for the last 14 years.  The Swami was hard-working, dedicated, kind-hearted and affectionate.  His outstanding monastic qualities earned him the respect and love of all.

Swami Sudamanandaji (Dhiren Maharaj) expired on 23 January at 5.45 pm at Varanasi Home of Service hospital.  He was 79, and had been suffering from old-age problems for a few years.  An initiated disciple of Swami Shankaranandaji, he joined the Order at Belur Math in 1955 and had Sannyasa from Swami Madhavanandaji in 1964.  Besides Belur Math, he served at Advaita Ashrama (Kolkata), Saradapitha (Belur), Ranchi (Morabadi), Nagpur, Balaram Mandir, Kankhal, Varanasi Advaita Ashrama and Bankura centres.  Simple, austere and loving by nature, the Swami was known for his keen sense of humor.
