Flood Relief: Torrential rains this month caused havoc in
West Bengal and nearby states. Lakhs of people were severely
affected; thousands of them became homeless and took shelter in
schools, clubs and on the roadside. Our centres started relief
operations immediately. Details of the relief materials
distributed are given below.
Jharkhand:
(i) Ghatshila: For 5 days,
the centre served food items four times a day (meals twice, and
tea and snacks also twice) to 82 flood victims whose houses in
Dahigora locality of Ghatshila on the bank of Subarnarekha River
had been washed away in the flood.
(ii) Jamshedpur – 1260 kg
rice, 202 kg dal, 60 kg potatoes, 5 kg spices, 5 kg
chira, 4 kg sugar and 30 sets of utensils (each set
containing 1 handi, 1 karai, 1 khunti, 1 hata,
6 plates and 5 glasses) to 1030 flood victims belonging to 5
villages of East Singhbhum and Sarailkela-Kharsawan districts.
Besides, the centre distributed assorted clothes to 355 persons
and treated 131 patients.

(i) Belgharia – 26,910 kg
chira, 72 kg milk powder, 2691 kg sugar, 3570 packets of
biscuits, 3570 candles, 7140 matchboxes and 3,57,000 halogen
tablets to 18,620 flood victims belonging to 11 villages of
Dasagram, Gokulpur and Gopinathpur in Purba Medinipur and
Paschim Medinipur districts. Besides, the centre rescued, with
the help of our speedboat, 219 persons who were stranded owing
to the flood.

(ii) Chandipur – 39,500 kg
chira, 3590 kg sugar, 6360 packets of biscuits,
6000 candles, 10,200 matchboxes and 2,34,000 halogen tablets to
82,052 victims belonging to 83 villages of Bhagawanpur - I & II
and Chandipur blocks in Purba Medinipur district.
(iii) Contai – 20,000
kg chira, 5000 kg sugar, 25 cartons of biscuits and
2,00,000 halogen tablets to 8366 flood-affected families
belonging to 75 villages of Egra and Contai sub-divisions in
Purba Medinipur district.


(iv) Medinipur – 51,000 kg
chira, 5100 kg sugar, 3000 packets of biscuits, and
3,00,000 halogen tablets to 50,627 victims belonging to 113
villages of Dantan - I & II, Keshiari, Narayangarh and Sabang
blocks in Paschim Medinipur district.
(v) Narendrapur – 72,806
plates of cooked food (khichuri), 3265 kg chira,
1288 kg gur, 17,000 ORS packets, 82,000 halogen tablets,
1750 jerrycans, 72,000 water-purifier packets and 4000 kg
bleaching powder in Patashpur - I & II, Bhagawanpur - I & II,
Egra - I & II, Chandipur and Panskura - I blocks in Purba
Medinipur district, and Narayangarh, Sabang and Debra blocks in
Paschim Medinipur district.


(vi) Tamluk – 17,363 kg
chira, 1736 kg sugar and 17,36,300 halogen tablets to 17,363
victims belonging to Pingla block in Paschim Medinipur
district.
Rehabilitation:
Tsunami Rehabilitation: Port
Blair: To overcome the acute shortage of drinking water
in the Andamans, caused by the salination of fresh water in
the area by the recent tsunami, our Port Blair centre
has set up a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Based Water Treatment
Plant for producing potable water from pond / well / rain
water, as a part of the Mission's Tsunami Rehabilitation
Project. The production capacity of the plant is 13,000
litres of drinking water per day.
